What GEO is and why it matters now
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting your content cited inside AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity — when they answer a user's question. These engines increasingly sit between your buyers and your website: a prospect asks the assistant, the assistant answers directly and names a few sources, and those named sources get the credibility and the click.
If your brand is not among the cited sources, you are invisible in a channel your buyers are already using. GEO is how you show up.
Step 1 — Let the AI crawlers in
You cannot be cited by an engine that cannot read you. The first, non-negotiable step is access: explicitly allow the AI and answer-engine crawlers in your robots configuration, and publish an authoritative llms.txt that tells them who you are and what your key pages are.
- Allow the major AI user agents (for example GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended).
- Publish an llms.txt describing your brand, your offering, and your most authoritative pages.
- Keep a valid sitemap so crawlers can discover everything you publish.
Step 2 — Server-render content and structured data
Many AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. If your content or your JSON-LD only appears after client-side rendering, those crawlers see an empty page. Server-render your body copy and inline your structured data as server-rendered script tags so the content is present in the raw HTML.
This single technical decision is the difference between being readable by every engine and being readable by only the few that run JS.
Step 3 — Write what engines prefer to cite
Generative engines cite sources that are clear, factual, and easy to extract. That means answer-first passages, concrete and verifiable facts, clean heading structure, and a visible FAQ that maps to real questions. Vague, unsourced, or meandering content does not get quoted — precise, credible content does.
Back every claim with a source and avoid fabrication entirely; engines are increasingly sensitive to credibility, and a single confidently-wrong claim is a reason to distrust the whole source.
Step 4 — Build credibility and corroboration
Citations follow credibility. Make authorship and the organization behind the content explicit (E-E-A-T), and earn mentions on other reputable sites — because engines weigh corroboration across sources. Being described consistently across the web makes you a safer, more likely citation.
Step 5 — Measure citations, not just rankings
